According to The World Bank, the average annual CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) emissions per person in America is about 16.5 metric tons annually.  Since each carbon offset negates the equivalent to one metric ton (or 2,205 pounds) of CO2e emissions, every American would need to acquire 16.5 carbon offsets on average to erase (fully) their annual carbon footprint.

Of course, the actual carbon footprint of any one person in America varies according to lifestyle.  That’s why it’s best to use a tool that takes household characteristics into account, as with the EPA’s Household Carbon Footprint calculator.

Certainly, not everyone will be able fully erase their carbon footprint.  Any donation, even for a single carbon offset, is a valuable step in the right direction.  Regardless of the number of carbon offsets an individual acquires from our projects, all donors will receive a beautiful certificate (PDF file) that displays their name (or the name of a designated beneficiary) along with the number of carbon offsets acquired in each transaction.
