Woodgas Emission Reduction (WER) units are equated to the worldwide standards of “carbon credits” or “carbon tax” for emissions of 1 metric ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.  The World Bank’s chart (Fig. 1) shows that the 2019 prices range from less than $1 up to $127 in Sweden.  The range can indicate A) the quality of the emission reductions (some are weak projects with questionable impacts), and/or B) the seriousness and a nation’s legal power over the efforts to reduce emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG).

WERs could be priced very high because of the quality of the project (CharTrac documentation of stove usage) and the additional benefits of the woodgas TLUD stoves for the impoverished families that use the stoves (where donations can be viewed as improving households and local communities apart from any climate issues).  WERs could also be priced low to attract buyers, but there are plenty of cheap carbon credits already available.  We have chosen the mid-range: slightly higher than California’s $16 rate and slightly lower than the $24 – $25 rates for the UK and European Union.  Please note that $20 is only half of the minimum price range ($40 to $80) needed by 2020 to be consistent with achieving the Paris Agreement temperature range.

When the quality of the Woodgas Emission Reductions is better understood, the WER price will probably increase.  For now, US$20 per WER carbon offset is a justifiable initial price.

Yes.  Juntos Energy Solutions is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Not quite.

A carbon credit refers to a permit or a tradable certificate representing the right to emit one metric ton of carbon dioxide or the mass of another greenhous gas with a carbon dioxide equivalent of one ton of carbon dioxide.  These permits or rights are generally used to incentivize emitters in their measures to reduce emissions and satisfy governmental restrictions.

A carbon offset, on the other hand, refers to a documented reduction or avoidance of release of one metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent where that reduction or avoidance negates the effects of carbon emitted in a different place or time.  It can also refer to the absorbing or sequestering of one metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent that would have otherwise remained in the atmosphere.

Every donation for carbon offsets is memorialized with a certificate (PDF file) that is emailed to the donor.  Certificates are emailed within 72 hours (3 days), and most donors receive their certificate within 24 hours after mailing.   Donors are advised to check their spam/junk folder if the certificate does not arrive to their inbox.

If a replacement certificate is needed for any reason (e.g., did not arrive, accidentally deleted, etc.), please contact us at carbonoffsets@juntosnfp.org using the same email address specified in the original transaction. Be sure to include the donor name, date, and amount of donation if the email address was used for more than one transaction.
